The Mercer Scholarship

Bath graduate Richard Roberts has established the Mercer Scholarship in Modern Languages & European Studies.

Worth £1,000 a year to the recipient, the scholarship is to reward students who do that little bit more. Academic achievement is essential but the award is primarily to encourage students to take full advantage of everything that a Bath education has to offer, to the benefit of themselves, the department and the University community.

Richard, who graduated in the class of 1997, has recognised his grandparents through the naming of the scholarship, and says of his gift:

“I enjoyed my five years at Bath immensely; there was a great balance between work, sport, arts and play. MLES isn’t the most high-profile course in terms of funding or corporate support and the sandwich year is often unlucrative.  If this scholarship can persuade just a few extra people to apply, and encourage them to do more than just study, then it will have succeeded. Finally, with the Government’s Matched Funding Scheme essentially doubling my contribution, now seemed the ideal time to set it up.”

Dr Sue Milner, Head of Department, said “MLES students have always made a valuable contribution over and beyond their academic work, and we are delighted that this has been recognised in this way. We are very grateful for this scholarship, and I look forward to the difficult decisions ahead over choosing the most deserving of the many strong candidates.”
