Alumni Fund grants £10.5k to special projects

The Alumni Fund exists to enhance the student experience at the University of Bath. Thousands of former graduates have given towards the fund, which last year raised £130,000. About half of the money raised is used for scholarships. The remainder is used to support projects which create opportunities for students, promote enterprise and innovation, and enhance the student experience. Decisions are made by a panel of alumni donor representatives, student representatives and staff at meetings held three times a year.

The second meeting of 2008-09 was held recently, and the Panel awarded grants totalling £10,477 to eight projects.

  • The SU Marketing Team were awarded a grant to purchase an Apple Mac computer for student clubs and societies to use in generating more professional-looking marketing materials to promote activities and events.
  • The SU Activites & Events team were given a grant to purchase a digital camera which can be used by all student clubs and societies
  • Nightline was given the funds to buy a laptop computer to enable them to offer a more effective and flexible service when dealing with different types of enquiries.
  • Backstage Technical Services were awarded a grant for a new Sound Multicore - a vital piece of equipment which would otherwise have to be hired by the organisers of many on-campus events, so this purchase will help keep event ticket prices lower for everyone.
  • The Department of Mechanical Engineering was given a grant towards extending the circulation of the Design & Project Exhibition Report Book to all contributing students to enable their work to be usedmore effectively during job hunting and in their future careers.
  • Campus TV were given a grant to buy a new video camera as well as some peripheral equipment and editing software.
  • The Sports Association were given a grant to help meet the additional costs of running the annual Blues Awards Dinner after a sponsorship deal falling through threatened the viability of the event.
  • The FloorBall Club were given funding for a FloorBall Rink - previously they had been able to use a rink which belonged to another organisation but which was stored here on campus, but when this was taken back they were unable to play the game properly, threatening the existence of this sport at Bath.

The next deadline for applying for an Alumni Fund project grant is Friday 29th May - if you know of a project which creates opportunities for students, promotes enterprise and innovation, or enhances the student experience, then please visit to find out more about how to apply.
