The Lisa May Scholarship

Lisa May was only 25 years old when she was killed in the 2004 Asian Tsunami.

Lisa travelled to Thailand to act as bridesmaid at her sister's wedding. She stayed on to spend Christmas with friends after her family returned home. Her friends all survived the tragedy.

Her father John May, a Bath graduate (Industrial Administration, 1970), had the awful task of co-ordinating the search for Lisa. Her body was found a few days later.

John has recently decided that a great way to remember Lisa through the University of Bath would be to name a scholarship after her. Having been placed in care as a child, John is all too aware of some of the difficulties students can face in achieving their aim of a university education. The Lisa May Scholarship is aimed at such young people. John intends to pay the tuition fees of an undergraduate student, beginning in 2009/10. He and Lisa’s brothers and sisters are in the process of choosing the first lucky recipient. This has become a wonderful focus for the family.

John knows that Lisa would have been very proud to have her name attached to such a scholarship and feels that it is a fitting way to remember his beloved daughter.
