Stuart Appleton Asia/Pacific Scholarship
5 May 2010

Stuart Appleton (BSc Social Sciences 1976) has made a generous gift to establish a scholarship, open to students from 32 countries within the Asia/Pacific region, to study for a taught postgraduate degree within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University.

Stuart was President of the Students' Union from 1976-77 and Chairman of Convocation from 1980-82.  For much of his career Stuart has specialised in media, corporate strategy and communications and has been the CEO of a number of companies.  These days he is Chairman of Cheerful Scout, which operates in the fields of corporate events, communication and DVD packaging and distribution. He also has interests in two boutique hotels in South East Asia. Previous to agreeing to fund this scholarship Stuart also made a significant legacy pledge to the University.

Professor Roger Eatwell, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences said "We are extremely grateful to Stuart for funding this exciting new scholarship for students from the Asia/Pacific region. There are relatively few postgraduate scholarships available for study at Bath and we are delighted with this latest generous financial commitment from Stuart.”

The first Stuart Appleton Asia/Pacific Scholarship, which has a value of £5,000, will be awarded in 2011. The scholarship recipient will be selected primarily on academic merit and leadership potential.
